General information about placement telephone interviews

How long do they normally last?

Placement telephone interviews can be anywhere from 10-60 minutes in duration. They are typically between 20 and 30 minutes though.

Who will I speak to?

Sometimes, you will speak to someone from the company that you apply for. However, the majority of the time, you will be speaking to a recruiting company that works in partnership with the potential placement opportunity.

Try to find out this information prior to the call as it will help you gauge how best to interact with the caller and what to expect.

What will they ask?

Telephone interviews vary in content. Some will focus more on the role in question, and others will focus more on getting to know you and seeing how you communicate.

Prepare for both scenarios.

How are they organised?

In most cases, you will be asked to log in to a system such as Calendly, which allows you to book a slot for a call with the recruiter. You will then receive an email confirmation of your call.

Do I call them? Or do they call me?

It depends. Check the details and remember which is the case.
