1. Read the job description

You need to know what they are looking for

Read through the job description and identify key traits that you think the employer is looking for. Once identified, figure out how those traits could be applied to different situations and how someone of that disposition would answer comparison type questions.

Also, if you read through the job description and feel as though you are a complete mismatch with what the company is looking for, it may be more time-effective to move on. Or, on the other hand, continue with a strong focus on answering honestly to your own attributes.

2. Work in a quiet and familiar environment

Distracted? Big no no. This will cause inconsistency in your answers and may sway you one way or the other.

Find a quiet environment where you are unlikely to be distracted. The library is often great, but it depends on how many of your friends go there. Don't be afraid to tell them to go away for 20 minutes while you complete the test.

What if my internet cuts out?

It is worth checking the conditions of your particular psychometric test but, in general, you can return to the test no problems. If not, you'd better find somewhere with a stable connection! Especially for when you come to video interviews and assessment centres.

3. Stay calm

The aim is honesty and consistency throughout your answers. Therefore, you must stay calm. You'll end up doing loads of these, chill!

4. Work briskly and consistently

This doesn't mean race through the questions. It means, work at a consistent pace and keep moving. If one question stumps you, go with your gut instinct and move on. You are being marked on all sorts of metrics so one of your primary concerns should be to keep moving through the process.

5. Trust your gut

Leading on from the previous point, you should trust your gut. What would you do? What is the first option that you go, yeah that's me. Go with it and don't look back.

If you have prepped well enough for the specific test and applied for a role that genuinely suits your traits as an individual, your gut will much more often than not, give you the right answer.

6. Be honest

Just be honest, this will be the best way to remain consistent and will give you a better outcome.

Don't try to pick the theoretically best answer, there aren't any right or wrong answers after all.
