A To-do list simply won't, do. The average student makes 50 industrial year applications. Don't fall into the trap of losing trap of where you have applied and the specifications of each role. That is not a position you want to be in. Imagine, you're at the stage of the assessment centre for a role you remember you really liked the sound of, but you can't remember what it is called. You can't remember the name of the role. Nightmare.

In this article we'll list a few different options that students have found success with.

What can I do?

Use a spreadsheet

This is the most popular method of keeping track of Placement applications. It is simple and effective.

Your spreadsheet should include columns including:

  • Company name
  • Role Title
  • Location
  • Closing Date
  • Salary
  • If you have applied
  • Whether you have followed up on your application
  • What stage of the process you have reached

If you don't want to spend the time putting this together, or want to make sure you haven't missed anything, upgrade to Pro and download our template.

Use Notion

Notion is a VERY powerful organisation and management tool that can be perfect for keeping track of your placement process. Infact, when used properly, we would advise it 10x over, above a simple spreadsheet.

I used Notion to track my placement process, and created a fully bespoke dashboard so I knew exactly what was coming up and when. It also has a section to keep track of contacts and their preferred method of contact + working hours, as well as a task list.

If you'd like to skip the complicated setup of such a system, head over to our store, where you can purchase and duplicate that very template.

Use Office Programmes

Sometimes a simple Word Document, or even PowerPoint will do the trick. Hell, if you want, use Publisher (does that still exist?). It all depends on how you implement it and how well you keep it up to date.

General rules for keeping track

  • Try to get into the habit of updating whatever tool you use as such as you receive news or complete a step.
  • Whatever you do, avoid having multiple locations to track your placement progress. I.e. a physical copy and a digital copy. This will only result in confusion and complication.

Automate tracking your progress

We haven't figured this one out yet. If you can, let us know! We'd love to share how you did it.
