Your LinkedIn profile picture is very different to one you would choose to use on Instagram or Facebook. Here are 10 tips for picking a the right LinkedIn profile picture.

Source: https://business.linkedin.com/talent-solutions/blog/2014/12/5-tips-for-picking-the-right-linkedin-profile-picture

1. Pick a picture that looks like you

The picture you use should clearly represent what you actually look like. Employers may use it for reference when you turn up for your video interview or assessment centre. There is no need to cause a surprise. Use a recent photo, not one from years and years ago.

It should reflect how you look on a daily basis, glasses, hair etc.

2. Use a high-resolution image

The ideal resolution for your LinkedIn profile picture is 400x400 pixels. However, larger images are excepted up to a file size of 8MB.

Avoid small, low resolution images. If the picture looks blurry, or needs to be zoomed in really far and loses quality, consider using a different one.

3. Make sure that your face takes up at least 60% of the frame

You don't need to make people squint in order to see your face. You need to confidently show your face in 60% of the frame. Here is a good example for guidance:

4. Ensure that you are the only person in the picture

Don't use a group photo as your profile picture. Cover image, fine. Profile image, nope.

You don't need to make visitors put in the extra effort to figure out which person in the image you are.

5. Get someone else to take a picture for you

Mirror selfies, nope.

Selfies in general, also nope.

Ask someone to take a high quality picture of you, it will look considerably more natural and professional.

Having half of your arm extended in the picture as you hold the phone up and take your cheesy picture is a no go.

6. Choose the right expression

Smile!

Your profile picture is an opportunity to convey your personal brand. So if you consider your brand a little more serious, it's okay to look serious in your picture.

However, generally speaking, smiling can help you look more personable and approachable as an individual.

One study of 800 profile pictures found that people view you as more likable, competent and influential if you smile in your pic. And smiles that show teeth were rated twice as likeable as closed-mouth smiles.

We recommend standing in front of a mirror and finding a natural expression that is comfortable to you before taking a picture. Keep it natural.

7. Avoid distracting backgrounds

Where you take your picture matters.

The focus is you, your face. You don't need an interesting or distracting background that takes away from that center focus.

This doesn't mean that the background necessarily has to be one solid colour, but a little background blur can work wonders.

Example:

8. Wear what you wear to work

Don't try to be over or under dressed.

Find a good balance. Something formal but not over the top full tux, unless that is the environment of the workplace that you are applying for.

Another thing to note is that solid colours tend to do best on camera.

9. Take the photo in soft, natural light

Lighting can completely change the look and feel of your photo. Standing beneath harsh lighting can change the tint of pictures and create shadows on your face.

On the other hand, using a camera flash may make your skin look shiny and give an unnatural look.

Natural light usually produces the best effect but avoid direct sunlight, as it can make your pictures look over exposed and blown out.

10. Use LinkedIn filters with caution

LinkedIn now offer six filters that can be applied to your profile picture.

Now these are very different from the filters you are likely familiar with. They are much more serious and professional. However, there are still some improper use cases to watch out for. Use them wisely.
